Did you know the 1.6L 110hp G4ED Alpha II engine in the 2006-2010 Hyundai Accent (like my Accent), 2006-2011 Kia Rio, 2002-2011 Hyundai Getz, and 2004-2007 Kia Cerato/Spectra has a Timing Belt AND a Timing Chain?

Pretty unique engineering as I’ve only ever known cars to have one or the other! The Alpha II has a belt connecting the crankshaft and one camshaft while a separate timing chain links that camshaft with the second one! The timing chain is contained within the head and is specced for the life of the car while belts are recommended to be changed every 90,000km.

Definitely a DOHC layout I’ve not heard of before! Maybe it’s more common than I know and I’m crazy...?

Its a relatively common set up, my Mondeo was the same.

I did! I’ve heard of people swapping in larger engines on my gen of Accent as well, but there are no kits and everything has to be fabbed.

Toyota’s 4AFE and probably similar engines have geared camshafts, instead of the chain between them.

I don’t know, the G4ED Alpha IIs seem to be pretty reliable? As long as the belt is changed they seem to go for a long time. It doesn’t bother me so much, I just thought it was an interesting and odd design setup! :)
